Editorial Standards

These are the rules we hold ourselves to. They exist because affiliate publications operate in a space where readers have good reason to be skeptical, and we'd rather earn trust than ask for it.

We test what we recommend

For any product we feature in a primary recommendation, at least one of the following is true: we have personally used it, we have tested it side-by-side with comparable products, or we have reviewed it based on extensive third-party testing combined with our own assessment of the product's specifications and design choices.

When we have not personally tested a product, we say so. We will never imply first-hand testing experience we don't have.

We write our own opinions

We are not paid to recommend products. We do not accept manufacturer-written copy. Our recommendations reflect what we actually think — including when our opinion is unfashionable, when it disagrees with industry consensus, or when we conclude that a popular product is not as good as its reputation.

We disclose how we make money

Fillmore Outdoors is funded by affiliate commissions. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may earn a percentage. This is disclosed at the bottom of every commercial article and on our affiliate disclosure page. The affiliate relationship never influences which products we recommend.

We update outdated content

Outdoor gear changes constantly — products are discontinued, redesigned, or replaced. We periodically review our recommendations and update articles when a featured product is no longer the best choice. The "Last updated" date in our articles reflects the most recent meaningful revision, not minor copy edits.

We correct mistakes

If we make a factual error, we correct it and note the correction. If we learn that a product we recommended has a defect or recall, we update the article promptly.

What we don't do

  • We do not run display advertising.
  • We do not accept paid product placements.
  • We do not write sponsored content disguised as editorial.
  • We do not write articles to please advertisers.
